PADI Assistant Instructor

Assistant Instructor (AI) is a professional-level certification that allows you to assist PADI Instructors in teaching scuba diving courses. It is the first step towards becoming a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI).

As an Assistant Instructor, you can help with classroom sessions, pool training, and open water dives, but you cannot lead courses or certify students on your own.

AI vs OWSI

In order to become a PADI Instructor, you need to complete the Instructor Development Course (IDC) and pass the Instructor Examination (IE).

The Instructor Development Course (IDC) is made up of two parts - the Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program.

You can take the AI course first, and then continue with the OWSI program, or you can take both parts together. Splitting the IDC into two parts allows you to gain experience as an Assistant Instructor before becoming a full Instructor, and it also gives you more flexibility in terms of scheduling and finances.

Prerequisites

  • Divemaster certification (or equivalent),
  • Minimum 18 years old
  • At least 60 logged dives
  • Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care (CPR and First Aid) training within the past 24 months.
  • Have a Medical Statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months

You also need to be an Emergency First Response Instructor, but you can earn this rating during your instructor training.

Make sure you comply (or have written approval from a doctor) before making your travel itinerary. There will not be any exceptions!

What documents and forms I need to sign?

At the beginning of the course (and before any in-water activities), student divers must sign:

Each course may have additional forms to sign. Your Instructor will provide you with all the necessary forms and explain them to you.

Do I need an insurance?

Yes.

As a dive professional, you are responsible for the safety of your students and clients, and having a good insurance is essential to protect yourself and your business. In some countries it is also a legal requirement for dive professionals to have insurance.

We recommend DAN Europe Insurance, which covers decompression sickness, hyperbaric chamber treatment, and other diving-related accidents. This is especially important if you plan to continue diving after the course, as it provides coverage for recreational diving activities and travel.

Do I need any scuba diving equipment?

Yes and No.

It is possible to rent all the necessary scuba diving equipment at the dive center, and many divers do it. However, if you plan to dive regularly (and as a dive professional you will), it is recommended to invest in your own scuba diving equipment, as it will be more comfortable and better fitted to you.

Also as a dive professional, you need to be an example for your students, and having your own equipment is part of that. You also need to be familiar with your equipment and know how to maintain it, so having your own gear will help you with that.
